Snow and Ice Removal Operations Underway

Jan 25, 2023

Snow and ice removal operations are underway to keep the university open and accessible for students, faculty, and staff, and visitors. Snow accumulations of four to seven inches through Wednesday are expected to create hazardous travel conditions.

Priority Parking Lots
Based on the anticipated timing of this event, F&S encourages individuals to use the priority parking lots, along with MTD service, until additional lots are cleared Wednesday afternoon. Vehicles parked in priority lots B4, E14, and F27 with a valid virtual permit for other rental facilities will not be cited for violations; however, enforcement of accessible spaces for people with disabilities, yellow zones, and blocked driveways will continue.

  • Lot B4, Levels Four and Five (North Campus) – Parking facility at the corner of University Avenue and Mathews Avenue
  • Shuttle Lot E14 (South Campus) – West of the State Farm Center, south end only
  • Lot F27 (South Campus) – Adjacent to the Veterinary Medicine Basic Sciences Building

Snow and Ice Reporting Tool
To help identify persistent areas of snow and ice across the campus, F&S launched a snow and ice reporting tool at https://go.fs.illinois.edu/SnowIceRemovalRequest. When using the form, individuals will be asked to provide the type of work requested, location, and contact information for follow-up, if necessary. This type of feedback is specifically requested at the conclusion of events, allowing crews to make repeated clearing passes first. Questions about snow removal efforts may also be directed to the F&S Service Office fsserviceoffice@illinois.edu, 217-333-0340.

Importance of Pretreatment
F&S Grounds and Transportation crews will apply a brine solution to streets, parking lots, and sidewalks to assist with melting snow and ice before winter precipitation arrives. Utilizing this mixture of rock salt and water is a proactive and economical way to pretreat the significant campus coverage area effectively, while ensuring the protection of the university landscape. The deicing solution, sprayed up to 72 hours before winter storms with pavement temperatures above ~15 degrees Fahrenheit, can melt one to two inches of accumulation and prevent adherence of ice and snow to concrete surfaces, which significantly aids plowing efforts when needed.

Thanks for your patience during winter storms. Please give F&S crews room as they perform this priority work and do their best to keep campus sidewalks, streets, pathways, parking lots, and building entrances clear of snow and ice.
