TIME CAPSULE FOUND IN ILLINI HALL CORNERSTONE
The Illini Hall Replacement and Altgeld Hall Renovation Project meant the removal of the cornerstone of Illini Hall on Tuesday, February 14, 2023. Originally set in 1907, there were no official records that a time capsule had been placed at that time, but nevertheless, one was found! The contents of the small metal box remain a mystery as the capsule will not be opened until October 1, which is the 150th anniversary of the University YMCA—the original occupant of Illini Hall.

FIRST STREET SHARED USE PATH OPENING
The First Street – Shared Use Path enhances safety and accessibility along south campus and the Curtis Road Corridor by providing significant pedestrian and bicycle accommodations on a 10' wide, mile-long, multi-modal path. The pathway between Windsor Road and Curtis Road along First Street also features sustainable and LED lighting that increases illumination with user activity. The project partners included the Village of Savoy, Illinois Department of Transportation, and Facilities & Services at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The work was funded by the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program through Rebuild Illinois.

ALMA MATER CONSERVATION

On Tuesday, August 7, 2012, The Alma Mater was removed from her granite pedestal and transported to The Conservation of Sculpture & Objects Studio (CSOS) in Forest Park, Illinois for conservation. Due to years of deterioration, it was determined parts of the sculpture needed to be disassembled and all corroded bolts and fasteners removed and replaced.

This required intricate disassembly in some parts of the sculpture, while in other sections, the bolts are accessible without disassembly. Access to all surfaces of the sculpture, both interior and exterior, are necessary to clean and remove corrosion and oxidation residues.

This video features an interview with CSOS Director and lead conservator on the Alma Mater sculpture Andrzej Dajnowski. For more images, video, and interview material on the conservation of the Alma
Mater see http://uofi.box.com/almamater. The conservation work was completed in spring 2014 and the Alma Mater was returned to campus in time for Commencement.
