Custodial Service Levels and Building Services Commencement Support

May 09, 2022

Because of the reduced number of students and faculty anticipated in campus facilities over the summer, the Building Services department will return to standard, pre-pandemic service levels beginning Monday, May 16. This transition will help building service workers (BSWs) prioritize regular custodial activities in offices, conference rooms, laboratories, shared spaces, hallways, stairwells, and other building locations.

Focus areas over the summer will include the following:

  • Returning to weekly cleaning for private offices and multi-cubicle areas
  • Maintaining appropriate cleaning levels in research laboratories
  • Prioritizing departmental work requests

All colleges, departments, and units are encouraged to review these service levels and coordinate with their respective Building Services supervisory staff to identify specific cleaning priorities from May to August. Beginning these discussions as soon as possible helps establish updated BSW priorities for custodial tasks while also identifying additional opportunities for requested services, such as extra office cleanings or floor work. Requests for floor work and specialty services will require review and approval by senior supervisory staff.

Commencement Support – Equipment Rentals and Trash Pickup
Public Functions provides special event support for campus departments and registered student organizations. A list of available equipment and fixtures, including audio-visual equipment, is available at https://fs.illinois.edu/services/more-services/public-functions. There are no rental fees for items, but labor charges will apply to delivery, setup, and removal services.

If end-of-the-semester commencement events, activities, and preparations will necessitate advance cleaning or produce a larger-than-typical amount of trash, especially during night and weekend periods, units and departments should submit a work order for assistance. Please provide as much detail as possible, such as an exact time, room numbers, and the type of service necessary.

COVID-19 Cleaning and Disinfecting Questions and Reporting a Building Location After a Positive Test
F&S continues to follow the cleaning and disinfection guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local public health professionals to help prevent the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. If an individual who has been in a university facility within the last 24 hours tests positive for COVID-19, please fill out the form at https://go.fs.illinois.edu/covidcleaningrequest. Questions and feedback regarding COVID-19 cleaning and disinfection activities should be sent to covid19cleaning@illinois.edu.

Locked Status for Some Buildings
Based on usage patterns and ongoing COVID-19 health and safety protocols, some facilities may return to “locked” status in May, meaning the building will be closed to the public. Please visit the Office of the Vice Chancellor Administration and Operations website for building status updates. BSWs will coordinate with facility contacts to determine how best to direct resources for locked facilities.
