U of I Geothermal Coalition Virtual Workshop

Facilities & Services (F&S); the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment; and the Illinois Water Resources Center recently formed a new Illinois Geothermal Coalition with the goal of making the university a leader in geothermal energy research and achieving Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP) goals.



Geothermal energy is a reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective way to provide heating and cooling. Projects at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, such as the monitoring well on the Bardeen Quad, the geothermal energy foundations at Ven Te Chow Hydrosystems Laboratory, and Campus Instructional Facility geothermal system, are already integrating new technologies at the U of I and advancing academic collaborations.

Facilities & Services (F&S); the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment; and the Illinois Water Resources Center recently formed a new Illinois Geothermal Coalition with the goal of making the university a leader in geothermal energy research and achieving Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP) goals. 

Representatives from the coalition and worldwide organizations and companies on held a Low-Temperature Geothermal Workshop on Thursday, November 5. F&S Executive Director Dr. Mohamed Attalla and Associate Director of F&S for Sustainability Morgan White will begin the event with an overview of the achievements and ongoing projects on the Urbana campus.

This and upcoming forums will highlight the progress being made to plan larger geothermal initiatives on campus and strengthen partnerships with national and international colleagues.
