Oct 12, 2020
F&S, the Division of Public Safety, and the Champaign Fire Department will conduct a spill containment exercise on the morning of Tuesday, October 20.

spill_response_drillF&S, the Division of Public Safety, and the Champaign Fire Department will conduct a spill containment exercise on the morning of Tuesday, October 20.

This year's mock scenario will simulate an oil spill by placing tracer dye in storm sewer inlets near the north side of Abbott Power Plant on South Oak Street in Champaign. The dye will then travel north to the Boneyard Creek, which flows east through the Urbana campus.

Please be aware that practice response activities featuring emergency vehicles and equipment will more than likely occur in the following locations:

•    First Street, between Abbott and Green Street
•    Campustown, north of Green Street
•    Bardeen Quad near Everitt Laboratory

The exercise is required annually by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and satisfies Abbott’s Facility Response Plan requirements. As part of the plan, F&S coordinates annual drills, and first responders are trained in minimizing, controlling, cleaning up, and reporting environmental emergencies. The F&S Safety and Compliance division also serves as the liaison between the university and the various regulatory agencies, facilitating and coordinating permit reviews.

More information about spill response and reporting is available on the F&S website. For questions, contact Bill Walsh wwalsh@illinois.edu, 217-300-7707, coordinator of special programs.
