CHAMPAIGN, IL (October 19, 2016) – The 2016 Energy Conservation Incentive Program (ECIP) will recognize outstanding individual and team efforts to reduce energy conservation in nine facilities on Campus Sustainability Day.

The $177K in awards will fund future facility improvements at winning buildings from cost avoidance achieved throughout the fiscal year. Notable past ECIP supported projects include the installation of new Undergraduate Library entry doors, LED upgrades at Spurlock Museum, and U-shaped bike racks outside of the Business Instructional Facility. The 2016 ECIP awards ceremony will take place during the Campus Sustainability Celebration Wednesday, October 26 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Alice Campbell Alumni Center. Representatives from departments/units in the following facilities will be in attendance. The celebration is open to the public and will include information tables and additional presentations.

Three years ago, Atmospheric Sciences, in the School of Earth, Society & Environment, was honored as one of the inaugural ECIP recipients. This year, their first place win in the Occupant Action category highlights the efforts made directly by building occupants to reduce energy usage by 7.5%.

Davenport Hall, home to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, becomes the second back-to-back ECIP winner for ongoing renovations that continue to make the building more energy efficient. 

The facility’s first place honor in Energy Advancement for 25.8% energy reduction demonstrates the impact of centrally funded energy conservation and capital improvement projects to improve the building envelope and modernize learning spaces.

Through occupant action and programs such as Retrocommissioning (RCx), Energy Performance Contracting, campus-wide lighting retrofits, and building system upgrades, campus has reduced energy consumption in facilities by 27% since FY08.

Starting in 2013, the ECIP has recognized outstanding departmental and unit efforts by funding future building upgrades for facilities with the greatest percentage of energy reduction from one fiscal year to the next.

ECIP Fast Facts: 

• Approximately $960K has been designated to departments and units in 28 facilities since the program’s inception
• The Admissions and Records Building, Doris Kelley Christopher Hall, Spurlock Museum, Atmospheric Sciences Building, and Davenport Hall are two-time ECIP winners
• Spurlock Museum was the first back-to-back ECIP winner (2013 for Energy Advancement and 2014 for Occupant Action)
• Doris Kelley Christopher Hall is the program’s only two-time winner for Occupant Action in 2013 and 2015
• In 2014, the top three buildings in the Energy Advancement category all benefited from RCx work, averaging almost 40% energy reduction
