Road Improvements on 1st and 4th Streets After Commencement

CHAMPAIGN, IL – Major campus road improvements will take place on First Street and Fourth Street this summer to upgrade pavement condition and enhance pedestrian access along key segments of campus. The work is scheduled to begin Monday, May 16, following Commencement Weekend, and be completed prior to the beginning of the fall semester. These projects will necessitate various closures and detours for motorized vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

First Street (Kirby Avenue to Gregory Drive)

  • Pavement reconstruction from Peabody Dr. to Gregory Dr.
  • Sidewalk installation near Memorial Stadium on the east side of First St.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalk ramps
  • LED street lighting upgrades

Fourth Street (St. Mary’s Road to Kirby Avenue):
  • Pavement reconstruction from St. Mary’s Rd. to Kirby Ave.
  • Sidewalk installation on the east side of Fourth St.
  • ADA sidewalk ramps
  • Traffic signal upgrades at Fourth St. and Kirby Ave. to include ADA features
  • LED street lighting upgrades
