Sixth Street Crosswalk Receives Permanent Upgrade

Aug 21, 2015
Upgrade work on the crosswalk will begin Monday, August 24

CHAMPAIGN, IL (August 21, 2015) – The mid-block crosswalk on Sixth Street between the Business Instructional Facility and Wohlers Hall will become permanent following a successful trial period last fall.

Upgrade work on the crosswalk will begin Monday, August 24 with crews creating a new west side ramp and associated curb bump-out, installing solar-powered lighted bollards, establishing improved reflective traffic delineators, and strengthening signage and pavement markings.  Substantial completion of the project is anticipated in September.

The initial evaluation process of the trial crosswalk included traffic counts, camera monitoring, and additional data gathering techniques, which confirmed the effectiveness of the street enhancements for the overall benefit of pedestrian safety.

The concept also received positive feedback from the campus community. Results from the crosswalk evaluation report performed in November 2014 survey along with detailed drawings of the crosswalk design and a map are now available.
