The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus currently features ten LEED® certified facilities, with an additional ten projects active in the certification process. The university is a national leader in sustainable building design by establishing requirements of LEED® Gold certification for all major renovations and new construction projects with values greater than $5M, applying these techniques to both new construction and historic preservation.
In August 2014, Bousfield Hall became the third university facility to achieve LEED Platinum, the U.S. Green Building Council’s highest certification level, along with Lincoln Hall and the Business Instructional Facility (BIF). BIF was the first facility to begin the LEED certification process earning platinum in December 2009.
There is approximately 21.7M gross square feet of buildings in the Campus Master Plan area, of which LEED certified facilities and those in process comprise more than 2.2M gross square feet of green building design.
