The solar farm is expected to produce more than 2% of the electricity for Urbana-Champaign campus
CHAMPAIGN, IL (November 8, 2012) – The University of Illinois Board of Trustees approved a 20.5 acre solar farm to be located at the intersection of First Street and Windsor Road.
The solar farm is expected to produce more than 2% of the electricity for Urbana-Champaign campus based upon projections for fiscal year 2015. This renewable energy project will aid the university in meeting the goals outlined in the Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP). The iCAP established a goal of 5% of campus electricity to come from renewable sources by 2015.
Facilities & Services Executive Director Jack Dempsey said, “The solar farm is another important step for the university’s commitment to sustainability. Exploring renewable energy sources such as solar energy is critical in the pursuit of carbon neutrality for our campus.”
